vegan or meat?

I guess that nowadays, there is hardly an environmental discussion that does not, at one point in time, touch the topic of our food.
And rightfully so. Because our food is one of the indicators that something in this world is seriously wrong.
Or do you find it normal that we throw away millions of tons of good food every year while part of humanity is starving? Or that we cut away millions of acres of trees that help us reduce the CO2 problem, only to replace them with cattle-farms that increase the CO2 problem?
Food, the things we eat, the way we produce them, it all is part of the environmental mess we're in. And if we want to get out of it, then part of our action should be to drastically reduce the amount of exploitation of natural resources. And that includes drastically reducing deforestation, because of all the resources we so much value, oxygen is one of the most important ones.

By now, everybody with access to media will have noticed that vegans claim to improve the health of our world by not using as big a surface for their yearly food production as people who eat meat. And they're right. Plenty of studies proof it.
But where things go wrong, is when they try to force feed their opinion on people who do not want to live vegan or vegetarian. Trying to forbid someone to do something does not work!
Only recently, I saw some comments on a  post on FB, where someone pro-vegan was discussing with someone pro-meat. It made me lose my appetite altogether! They were this close to calling each other names, they had quite obviously no respect for each other whatsoever, and the outcome of the discussion was absolutely zero. I'm absolutely sure that afterwards the pro-vegan person was upset for over an hour, then cooked some vegetables and ate without too much pleasure, and the pro-meat person thought to himself "vegans. They're all pussies", threw a big steak on the barbecue and ate a lot more meat than he normally would have just to set them "vegan pussies" right.

Let's face it. People are not, by nature, vegans. For more than 100,000 years, our diet consisted partly of meat and that is not going to change. At least not within the next 10 to 50 generations. And that is no problem, as long as we can stop the meat producing industry from making us believe we must eat loads of it, as cheap as possible, every single day. If we can convince people, that one piece of excellent meat or fish, from an animal that has lived a healthy and good life and has been treated with respect, is so much tastier than what they eat now, that it is worth reducing their meat consumption to once or twice a week for, we will see a true change in our environment. Without bashing each others heads in.
Converting the world to a place where people eat healthier and reduce the consumption of animals out of conviction is not a quick process though. And not easy. But it is worth it, because it is the only way it will work.

So Vegan or meat? I think there is room for both. As long as we respect each other and talk to each other, listen to each other's opinions, we will be able to change the eating habits in this world in a way that benefits us all.
