The world is in pain.
Every day, we can read about climate change, the need for renewable energy, for electric cars, reduction of CO2 emission et cetera.
All very true and correct. Sadly. And exactly what sustainability is and what technological developments we still need to really live environmentally friendly is a very complex topic, which is, unfortunately, very often diffused by political and financial motives and influenced by propaganda of large industries and governments.
And through it all, we are so distracted that we fail to see one important thing.
Nature is in trouble and we need to save it right now.
And with nature, I mean all ecosystems that provide us with the things we need for bare survival of our species. Oceans with intact coral reefs, fish and mammal populations, providing us with food, water and sequestering CO2. Forests, savannahs and steppes with intact populations of plants, trees and animals to provide us with breathable air.
Buying an electric car does not reduce the amount of CO2 in the air. Nor does it generate oxygen.
Living vegan does not reduce the amount of CO2 in the air or generate oxygen either.
These things are very important, because they help to reduce the daily addition to the burden we have already put on our planet. But they do not save an elephant from dying.
And we have to stop elephants and other animals from becoming extinct. We have to stop forests, coral reefs, and all other natural bio systems from being destroyed. Because even if we would manage to produce, transport, live in a 100% sustainable way, if we would be able to stop adding too the problem, we still have not solved the problem.
All our efforts to reduce, change, improve, are focussed on not adding anymore to the problem, but not on "cleaning up" and reversing the current situation. And the simple reason for that is that we can not do it alone.
Nature can.
So unless we make sure we save the last bits of unspoiled nature we have and start working on restoring nature to the level of maybe 50 years ago, we may be able to reach a sort of status quo, but not a healthy liveable planet for future generations.
And in order to save and possible restore nature, we need the help of people who are willing to dedicate their time and lives to exactly this task. Some of them in organisations that focus on the long term goals of creating political and regulatory frameworks for the conservation of nature. Some of them in organisations that act right now, on site, fighting for every acre and every life of every animal or tree we so badly need.
Please think of them.
If you are reducing your meat consumption, buying an electric car, putting solar panels on your house or doing any other type of thing that reduces your use of natural resources, thank you. Your decisions and acts are important.
But remember that reducing your daily addition to the ecological burden does not stop or reverse the problem the earth is facing. So please support those organisations that are fighting to save and restore nature whenever you can and as much as you can.
Without your help, these organisations can not do their work. Without their work, nature is quite possibly lost. And without nature, you, your children or your grandchildren can not live much longer on this planet.
